Few works have sparked such intense debates in the history of philology as the "Dialogue on the Correct Pronunciation of Latin and Greek Speech," a work by the distinguished Dutch scholar of the Renaissance, Erasmus.
In this book, published in 1528, Erasmus advocates for a new pronunciation of the two classical languages, as opposed to the pronunciation known up to that time, which was based on oral tradition.
Although he was not the first to argue that the pronunciation of his time should differ from that of the ancient Greeks and Latins, Erasmus presented his views so systematically and convincingly that the new pronunciation of the two classical languages came to be known as "Erasmian."
