Description

Continuation of the texts of Plotinus. Indicatively: On the Heavens, On Matter, Against the Gnostics, etc.

Plotinus was born in Upper Egypt around 203 AD and grew up in Alexandria. He studied with the Alexandrian teachers of philosophy, primarily with the Platonic teacher Ammonius Saccas. Wanting to explore Eastern thought, he joined the army of the emperor Gordian who was campaigning in Persia. When the imperial army was defeated, Plotinus managed to escape, reach Antioch, and then move to Rome, where he lived until the end of his life.

He taught philosophy and gained a reputation as both a teacher and a moral figure. Among his students were prominent figures of Roman society - including the emperor Gallienus. His dream of founding a city in Campania, named Platonopolis, governed according to Platonic ideals, was undermined by the imperial counselors.

He began to write when he was already 49 years old. He noted his philosophical developments on paper, without a second reading, without corrections, and often without interrupting his discussions with his students. Among the latter, Porphyry took on the role of literary editor and publisher of his teacher's work, dividing it into 6 books of 9 treatises, which he named 'Enneads'.

Plotinus, one of the last great representatives of philosophical thought, died in 270 AD in Campania.
