BOOKS H` - I`: Continuation with reference to juices and resins. A work with clear empirical characteristics, the first scientific botany, still in use during the Middle Ages.

Theophrastus of Eresos in Lesbos was born around 370 B.C. He studied at the Platonic Academy and was friends with Aristotle. After the Stagirite's departure from Athens (323 B.C.), he succeeded him in the direction of the Lyceum. He taught a multitude of students, among whom were Menander, Demetrius of Phaleron, and Dinarchus. He died at an advanced age in 287 B.C.

His works, both thematically and in terms of titles, refer to Aristotle, whom he generally followed. He dealt with all areas of natural science as well as philosophy, rhetoric, and political thought. From his philosophical work, we have few fragments, but a large part of his works on characters and the Characters have been preserved.
