On the Fortune or Virtue of Alexander, Speech A, B: The relationship of Alexander the Great with fortune. What favors or what adversities did fortune reserve for the Macedonian king and how did he rise above it? The bravery of Alexander.
Are the Athenians more famous for war or for wisdom? Plutarch develops the view that the greatness of Athens is mainly due to the people of action, those who shone in military contests, and less to the people of intellect.
The biographer and philosopher Plutarch (c. 50-120 AD) was born in Chaeronea, Boeotia. Through his travels, he broadened his intellectual horizons and came into contact with personalities of the time, primarily prominent Romans. He spent most of his life in his homeland and held public priestly offices.
His surviving work is distinguished into the historical-biographical part and the so-called 'Ethical' writings. In the 'Parallel Lives,' prominent Greeks and Romans are compared and the worlds each represents are indirectly contrasted.
In the 'Ethics,' issues of morality, philosophy, science, politics, literary criticism, as well as topics from the realm of religion, nature, history, etc. are developed, sometimes in the form of dialogues and other times as treatises or dissertations. A polymath with a subtle mind, the author expressed traditional Greek values with simplicity and an optimistic outlook.
His work delights and educates, while also being an important source of literature from the classical and Alexandrian periods.
