On the Common Notions according to the Stoics: A work in the form of a dialogue, wherein the Stoic teaching is criticized for its negative stance towards common notions, the fundamental and widely held beliefs in the fields of ethics, logic, and natural philosophy.
That it is not pleasant to live according to Epicurus: A polemic against Epicurean philosophy and its hedonistic dimension, regarding its inability to secure a pleasant life for those who embrace its doctrines.
The biographer and philosopher Plutarch (c. 50-120 AD) was born in Chaeronea, Boeotia. Through his travels, he broadened his intellectual horizons and came into contact with prominent personalities of his time, primarily distinguished Romans. He lived most of his life in his homeland and held public priestly offices.
His surviving work is distinguished into the historical-biographical part and the so-called 'Ethical' writings. In the 'Parallel Lives', notable Greeks and Romans are compared, indirectly contrasting the worlds that each represents.
In the 'Ethical' writings, issues of ethics, philosophy, science, politics, literary criticism, as well as topics from the realms of religion, nature, history, etc., are developed, sometimes in the form of dialogues and other times as essays or dissertations.
Erudite and with a subtle spirit, the author expressed traditional Greek values with simplicity and an optimistic worldview. His work delights and teaches, being a significant source of literature from classical and Hellenistic times.
