Long before Homer, a script was used in Greece that was completely unrelated to the alphabet. The kings of Mycenaean Greece kept their records on clay tablets, written in a script now known as Minoan Linear B.
In 1952, it was deciphered and proved to conceal an early form of the Greek language. This book narrates the story of the discovery, decipherment, and interpretation of Linear B, allowing us to now read the administrative documents of these small prehistoric states.
The book also discusses two other related scripts: Linear A, a precursor to Linear B, which was used for a language still unknown, and a Cypriot script that borrowed from Linear A and is equally enigmatic.
Many interpretations have been proposed for these scripts, but until more inscribed tablets are discovered, the mystery surrounding them will remain unsolved.
