Description

Today, as the monster of globalization and totalitarianism so openly reveals its intentions, it is imperative for each of us to contribute, to the extent that we can, our part in preserving the fragile structure of tradition that is under siege from many fronts. This book was created based on this logic.

It is an attempt to simplify the learning of the Pontic lyre, using an alternative and innovative method. It employs European notes, but not in a traditional notation system on a staff. The selection of musical pieces included in its pages was made to cover: a) all known rhythmic patterns used in Pontic music, b) a wide range of music from various regions of Pontus, so that, as students progress step-by-step in learning, they can discern the musical differences between the regions, the unique playing styles of each, and the pluralism of Pontic music.

Lastly, it serves as yet another source for obtaining historical, organological, and general knowledge about the Pontic lyre, as well as a foundation for a more accurate beginning of a simultaneous audiovisual practical learning approach, within the framework of immediate and experiential transmission from teacher to student.

Dear friends, I personally consider music to be the most harmonious universal language, in whose vocabulary all cultures and peoples of the world have contributed throughout the ages of human history. It possesses the unique power and ability to unite us all regardless of our origin, background, and preferences. This power is in our hands... literally and metaphorically... Let's utilize it in the best way possible.

Sincerely, Diogenes H. Ainatzis
