Regarding the work and contribution to Greece of the inspired German architect, painter, and classical thinker Leo von Klenze (1784 - 1864), only fragmentary views and judgments have been published in our country to date. This creates a negative image of an authoritarian secret advisor who distorted the original plan for the new Athens of Kleanthis and Schaubert.
Klenze has also been attributed with the attempt to impose foreign models and ideologies on the newly formed Greek society. More impartial, yet positive, are the evaluations of Greek archaeologists regarding Klenze's contribution to the preservation of ancient monuments in Greece.
This study attempts to outline the personality, the inspired vision, the dynamic intervention, and, most importantly, the ethos and selfless philhellenism of Klenze, who was connected to our homeland not only ideologically - like so many other charismatic Germans - but also practically.
