D. Michalopoulos is a historian who, during the years 1980-2, was a collaborator, in History matters, of the then President of the Republic and, subsequently, maintained personal contact with him. The work, therefore, is a biography of one of the most important political figures of Modern Greece - a biography, however, the axes of which are constituted by international developments, as they appear and are presented through the exploration of both unpublished archival sources, American, Greek and British, as well as already published ones.

Consequently, the starting point of Konstantinos Karamanlis' rise is located in the assassination, in May 1948, in Thessaloniki, of the journalist George Polk, who intended to bring to light the corruption, the "endemic disease" of the public life of the Greeks. And, it is understood, this rise was decisively facilitated not only but also accelerated by the characteristically steady aversion of our future prime minister towards all kinds of scandals, towards which the entire political world of our country also consistently displayed an inexplicable insensitivity. At the same time, the also emblematic aversion of Konstantinos Karamanlis towards empty rhetoric is emphasized, the main cause of the misfortune that perennially afflicts our homeland, and the decisive importance of the MacKinder Doctrine regarding the geopolitical role of Greece and the Greeks is highlighted.
