The Uprising of the Ladies follows the traces of a category of women within which, for the first time at the end of the 19th century, a feminist consciousness developed.
It examines the social conditions of the lives of middle-class Greek women, as shaped in urban centers during the 19th century, particularly in Athens.
It explores the ways in which women from these strata attempted to overcome or subvert the constraints of their social position, how they benefited from Europeanization and the contradictions of the new organization of gender social relations within the context of the independent Greek state.
It examines the paths they took to develop autonomous action, the forms of female subjectivity and consciousness.
Finally, it investigates the structure and evolution of feminist consciousness, the subversive dynamics, and the contradictions of thought regarding gender equality as developed in the central theme of the Journal of the Ladies from 1887 to 1908.
