A comprehensive work on Messinia in its cultural continuity, that meets the requirements of scientific research, has undoubtedly been a desideratum. The extensive manuscript we present with this edition aims to fill an existing gap and highlight the main aspects of the journey of this ancient region of our land in history and its significant contribution to the cultural evolution of Hellenism.
The sixteen presentations are presented in the form of a lively journey, which starts from prehistoric times, continues through Antiquity, Byzantium, Latin rule, Turkish rule, the Revolution, and concludes in the modern and contemporary era.
The significant archaeological remains, objects of prehistoric, classical, and Byzantine archaeology, with a focus on Ancient Messini, the famous Byzantine churches, and the unique fortresses of the area, are showcased.
The fundamental milestones of the historical path of Messinia during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, in the pre-revolutionary period, and in the Palingenesis, with emphasis on the beginning of the Revolution, the heroic Maniaki, and the culmination of the Struggle at Navarino, are captured.
The timeless multifaceted spiritual dynamism of Messinia is documented through studies related to the origin and evolution of Language and Philology, culminating in the famous Linear B tablets, as well as in the development of philosophical-theological thought and music education.
Even the Messinian society emerges vividly and expressively in presentations on the aspects of popular life (housing, agriculture, social, intellectual life) and the rural space, such as the significant cultivation of currants, which constitutes a considerable economic resource for the inhabitants.
The highly significant architecture of Kalamata with its imposing mansions and neoclassical buildings, as well as the urban planning of the city after the earthquakes, which is thoroughly researched, marks the trends and choices of the Messinians on the crucial issue of urban aesthetic and respect for traditions.
