"Introduction to Medical Mycology" is a useful textbook for familiarization with Medical Mycology. It briefly presents the main elements of laboratory diagnosis and monitoring of mycoses, while simultaneously approaching some of the most significant related clinical conditions in an organized manner.
Its chapters include the thematic sections of laboratory diagnosis of deep and superficial mycoses, harmonization of sensitivity thresholds, and monitoring therapeutic levels of antifungal drugs, candidal infections in pediatric patients, fungal infections in immunocompromised patients and patients in intensive care units, as well as skin mycoses and its appendages. At the end, there are characteristic, schematic representations of important pathogenic fungi, along with descriptive elements of their morphology. To facilitate the understanding of these descriptions, as well as for the interpretation of terms encountered in the international literature, a comprehensive English-Greek glossary of useful mycological terms is attached.
The coordination and editing of the book were undertaken by Timoleon-Achilleas Vyzandiadis, associate professor of Medical Biopathology-Microbiology at the A' Microbiology Laboratory of the Medical School of A.U.Th. The writing involved physicians, faculty members of the Medical School of A.U.Th. and the National Health System, who, due to their position and specialty, systematically engage in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of fungal infections.
