The purpose of this structural-functional and communicative Grammar of Modern Greek is to systematically describe the morphological and syntactic structures of the contemporary language, the way in which syntactic functions and lexical elements contribute to the organization of the message, as well as their use in communication.
The authors of this grammar seek, on the one hand, to utilize the achievements of modern linguistic science, and on the other hand, to document the current Greek language, showcasing its dynamics and evolutionary trends.
The grammar is written in such a way as to meet the demands of the specialist (teacher, philologist, linguist, etc.), while also being accessible to the non-specialist reader.
This represents a different conception and reflection on issues of language analysis, which automatically leads to a different structure of the grammar. Specifically, the presentation of the material does not begin from the traditional categories of parts of speech but from concepts and functions of language that are fundamental to communication.
