Because the reader of my work will surely wonder several times how I began this endeavor, what my initial thoughts were, and how I realized the need to achieve my purpose, I feel the obligation to make a few confessions.
The idea started to flutter in my mind very early, in early 1943, when the supervisor of the then vacant chair of the history of modern Greece, the professor of Byzantine History Ioannis Voyiatzidis, assigned me as a newly elected lecturer to teach, during the academic year 1943-1944, the period of Kapodistrias (January 1828 - September 1831).
Since it was my strong desire to respond as best as possible to the trust of the supervising professor, as well as to the members of the philosophical school, I immediately began -with a sense of high responsibility- to prepare my lessons based on a detailed content outline, referring especially to the relevant sources -as well as to the aids- and simultaneously seeking the assistance of the so-called auxiliary sciences of history, namely public and political economy, psychology of individuals and masses, sociology, anthropogeography, constitutional law, various theories of History, etc., for the understanding and interpretation of the various problems that I would encounter during the course of my research.
With such a broad basis and perspective, as well as according to the principles I outlined above, and in the "Introductions" of the volumes of my work, the chapters of my History were written and rewritten for decades until I reached the end of my purpose, at the end of my journey into the past, and I now deliver -after half a century of continuous searches and research- to the nation my complete work.
