Description & Specifications

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies (Manolis Triantafyllidis Foundation) at the University of Thessaloniki today makes public the book by the late Professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Philosophy and for many years a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute, Nikolaos P. Andriotis, 'History of the Greek Language'. Of the four parts of the work, the first two, which refer to the ancient and later history of the Greek language, were published in the collective work 'History of the Greek Nation' by Εκδοτική Αθηνών (vol. G2, pp. 566-570 and vol. E, pp. 258-267) and were granted to the Andriotis family for this republication.

The Institute wishes to add its own thanks. The third section, concerning the medieval language, needed to be compiled from notes that the late Andriotis either used in his teaching or distributed to his students. This task had been entrusted by the Board of Directors to the former scientific collaborator of the Institute and now Professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Philosophy, Mr. Charalambos Symeonidis, who expresses his gratitude from this position as well.

Finally, the fourth part, which refers to the Modern Greek language, was submitted by the Andriotis family typed by the author himself, who intended it for publication along with the other parts. The Institute has fully respected all the texts and, with minimal interventions for oversights, mainly typographical or typing errors, reproduces them as they were printed or written by the author.

The orthographic, phonetic, or morphological differences that readers will notice between our other editions and this edition are due to our desire to maintain the author's choices, who as an etymologist of the Greek language certainly had the freedom to embrace something different from the established norms. For the same reasons, the polytonic system of his texts has been retained.

The Board of Directors considers it its duty to thank the former director of the Institute, Mr. Vasileios Foris, who undertook the difficult task of preparing the publication and continued it, sacrificing many of his free hours even after his departure from the Institute.
