The social role of the fairy tale in Greece remains, to a large extent, unexplored. Despite the numerous collections of fairy tales, folk storytellers continue to exist in our country.
This work attempts to approach the fairy tale as a historical object, in its evolution, but also to relate it to a cultural present, through the study of certain fairy tales and storytellers in local communities where storytelling is a living tradition. It is based on fairy tales collected from an extensive field research of material collection and narrators, who live on the islands of the Aegean on one hand and in the refugee communities of the Minor Asian Greeks on the other.
The book also includes chapters on the main international scientific theories of the fairy tale, on the first steps of fairy tale research in Greece, as well as on the utilization of fairy tales today, through their multiple uses and re-significations in written or printed discourse, in the language of images, in theater, in cinema, in other forms of art, or in the world of new technologies and in the entertainment industry.
At the end of the book, a practical dictionary of fairy tale concepts and things is provided. This study emerged from the need to explore the Greek fairy tale at the local level today, with respect to the voice of folk storytellers, but also to the monumental work accomplished in the field of fairy tale research by the great Greek folklorists.
