Fifteen centuries of architectural activity have left a large number of ecclesiastical monuments in present-day Greece, some of which are considered masterpieces of Byzantine church architecture.

This book represents the first attempt to systematically gather information, on one hand scattered across various writings and journal articles regarding medieval churches in Greece and on the other hand deriving from the direct study of other, previously unknown, publications.

There is also an effort to highlight the peculiarities of these monuments within the framework of Byzantine church architecture.

In the eight chapters of the book, corresponding to eight distinct periods from the 3rd century to 1830, the specific political, social, economic, and technological conditions under which the churches were built are presented.

This is followed by an analysis of their architecture (typological, stylistic, and construction), which allows for the study of the evolution of church architecture in Greece, from the time of Emperor Constantine to the creation of the new Greek state, an evolution that is slow and hard to distinguish but extremely interesting.

Rich and original photographic material covers this new synthesis in the field of historical architecture.
