The term "narratology" denotes the scientific field that developed around the mid-20th century within the framework of literary studies and, focusing on the structure of a narrative as well as the act of narration itself, attempts to establish a theory of narrative discourse. A narrative is the text, that is, the spoken or written discourse, which contains a story (the plot, the narrative content, the set of events presented) and which must be conveyed by a narrative act, the narration (the discourse through which the story is presented). Thus, narratology specifically focuses on the types of narrators, narrative techniques, plot, etc., and proposes models for narrative analysis.
