Description & Specifications

In 1885, one of the most renowned modern Greek painters, Theodoros Rallis, decided to visit Mount Athos in search of themes for his works. His aim was to study the art he would encounter in the monasteries and to get a taste of monastic life, particularly by observing the daily lives of the monks.

This experience was recorded in his diary, which he published in 1899 in Cairo, in French. The discovery of a copy by a researcher in the library of G. Mavrokordatos - Baltatzis at the National Library of Greece allowed for the translation and commentary of the text.

Its uniqueness as a testimony from a modern Greek artist about Mount Athos during the last quarter of the 19th century, of which we have few records, along with the indirect connection of Byzantine tradition and modern Greek art, makes this reading invaluable.

The vividness and simplicity of his style will delight book lovers, while the author's and painter's observations will reveal interesting details to the specialized scholar.
