Description

Description

The relations between the Byzantine Empire and the Russians constitute one of the most important chapters of medieval Greek history and span a significant period of approximately six and a half centuries, with a central pivotal point being the Christianization of the Russian nation at the end of the 10th century AD - an event rightly ranked among the most significant in world history.

This monograph, supplemented with a detailed chronology for the period from the first half of the 9th century to the end of the 15th/beginning of the 16th century, records the state and findings of related research on an international level, emphasizing the importance of Byzantium's relations on the one hand with the early state of Kiev (9th-11th/12th centuries) and on the other hand with the state of Muscovy after the gradual liberation of the Russians from the intermittent (from the first decades of the 13th century) Mongol overlordship from the 14th century onwards. Particularly highlighted in this study are the portraits, diplomatic, commercial, and cultural relations between Byzantines and Russians within the framework of the created "Byzantine Commonwealth" of the eastern Christian nations of Byzantium's Balkan and northeastern border.
