With this first volume, the publication of the findings of the research program on the history of Greek theater begins, which has been developed over the last twelve years at the Institute of Mediterranean Studies in Rethymno.

The introduction of the emerging institution of regular theater performances into early post-revolutionary Greek society is traced, as well as the arduous emergence of a new professional field that ultimately manages to establish itself, thanks to the system of relentless tours by its members in the urban centers of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The improvised gradual development of the art of the domestic actor is documented, and the awkward oscillation of contemporary playwrights between the ideals of Neoclassicism and Romanticism is recorded, within the framework of adopting irreconcilable European models for forging a new national identity.
