Toynbee's book is interesting because it deals with events of particular importance in modern Greek history that influenced the course of Hellenism.

Although it was published just before the Asia Minor Catastrophe, it refers to the end of a period that is identified with the territorial expansion of the modern Greek state, during which the liberation of Greek populations was a decisive factor in shaping its foreign policy.
