Disciplines such as theater studies, which have a complex cognitive subject, inherently require a variety of methodologies and models of explanation, and they must be skeptical of the demand for a single method that can provide real solutions to the problems of analysis.
This may indeed be the lesson for the future that emerges from this book. For, through various paths and in different ways, the developments in the field of theatrical theory converge here, as evidenced by the study of the relevant literature, both Greek and foreign.
The questioning of faith in a single theory of theater is followed by a general caution that also embraces the fragmentation of approaches. We are now talking not about one but about multiple theories - perhaps many - not of "theater," which no longer exists as a unified phenomenon, but of the "theatrical," which is a defining element of various manifestations, including theater in the conventional sense.
