Melios Kadras, the hero of the book, has stopped being a child and no longer counts the stars, only the thorns that life lays on his path. He wanders once more in the province of Northern Greece, where he encounters refugees thrown into barren villages, cunning gypsies philosophizing, and poor, uneducated shepherds and farmers.
There, he meets two people who, each in their own way with their folk wisdom, help him find refuge in the area. He becomes a teacher in a village and proudly stands tall against the arrogance of the "masters." He helps the poor and the helpless find some meaning in their monotonous lives and faces every injustice, every difficulty that arises before him with strength.
He makes the long-awaited return, riding on horseback, to his city, to meet again his old classmates, but, above all, his one true love, Agrambeli – a journey so bitter, that afterward he feels the need to hit the road once more...
