The purpose of the book is to clarify the content and examine the limits of sociological knowledge. At the same time, it seeks to demonstrate the inadequacy, and consequently the diminished importance, of a methodology free from social meaning in the field of social sciences.
Sociology is not limited to the techniques of the feasible, crushing the art of the particular, nor does it perceive social structures as absolutely stable entities. The rise of social knowledge and its scientific conception should be based on the dialectical relationship between the subjective content of social action and the objective social structure.
The maiming or devaluation of one pole of this dialectical relationship creates insurmountable practical and conceptual problems in a science concerning society.
