Description & Specifications

The present study examines the problem of the relationships between philosophy, knowledge, and science, focusing on epistemology: it proposes a unified conception of epistemology that arises as a result of four component parts - a scientific, an anthropological, a historical, and a philosophical one.

The scientific component highlights the connection of epistemology with the foundational designs of various sciences. The anthropological brings to the forefront the conditions under which knowledge is produced, synthesized, and interpreted by subjects (the scientists). The historical component focuses on highlighting the importance of the historical developments of the sciences in shaping epistemology, while the philosophical component critically and reflectively traverses the overall epistemological conception, reminding us of their deep, continuous, and necessary connection.

With this perspective, the relationships between philosophy, knowledge, and science are illuminated in new ways that were not clear in previous conceptions of epistemology. The primary goal of the present study is to avoid the restrictive conception of epistemology that dominated until recently (and continues to dominate in certain circles), according to which epistemology either focuses on the formation of the foundational designs of the sciences or is incorporated into the philosophy of science.

By highlighting the anthropological component and the contribution of critical-reflective philosophy to the formation of epistemology - which is the second goal of our study - a general epistemological conception is shaped that aims to refer not only to mathematics and the physical sciences but also to the social sciences.

Moreover, this general conception of epistemology places particular emphasis on the role of the scientist-researcher as the subject who produces and synthesizes knowledge through the practical-interpretive processes in which they are involved.
