The Spanish heritage of the family, the multilingual environment in the small Bulgarian town of Ruse, the patriarchal structure of the Jewish family, the first impressions from school in Manchester at the height of the British Empire, the outbreak of World War I in Vienna, the wartime and post-war period in democratic Zurich, the loss of his beloved father, the adoration for his mother, and the intense emotions on the way to adolescence form the backdrop against which the child who would become one of the greatest writers in the world grows up.

The language that was not cut off is the first part of Canetti's masterful autobiographical trilogy and is being translated for the first time in Greece.
