Why should one engage with the letters of King Constantine I to his Italian mistress Paola? There are love letters that contain valuable information of broader significance, beyond the romantic expressions, reflections, fantasies, or other "salacious" yet fundamentally private details.
Such are the letters of Constantine to Paola. They tell us much about Constantine's personality, in his own handwriting. No other source has such immediacy or reliability. This is why they have been used as evidence (without proper attribution, as they should have been) by a staunch monarchist like Panagiotis Pipinelis and a devoted courtier like Konstantinos Louros.
As a result, excerpts have even appeared on the official website of the former royal family... The purpose of this book is limited and focused: to highlight critical aspects of Constantine's personality, as revealed through his own letters.
Perhaps this will also reveal the discrepancy between the real person and the idol adored by half of Greece. This book complements my previous two books on the National Schism (1915 and After 1922). The goal remains understanding, explanation, interpretation – not condemnation.
This objective is also served by the illustrations with many photographs that are unknown to the general public.
