The Karamanlis-Palace conflict of 1963 marked a political crisis that resulted, in the first phase, in the departure of the founder of the ERE from politics and, in the second, the plunge towards dictatorship. The events may be known, however, the turmoil caused within the conservative party by the divergence of opinions between Konstantinos Karamanlis and King Paul, and primarily with Queen Frederica, has not been thoroughly highlighted – and furthermore, the intense dispute among the media outlets supporting Karamanlis.

George A. Leontaritis had the opportunity - due to personal acquaintances - to discuss the behind-the-scenes of this critical period with Konstantinos Karamanlis himself, Spyros Theotokis, Panagiotis Kanellopoulos, Georgios Rallis, and other protagonists of that time. Their testimonies are of exceptional interest, as while they were confidential at the time, today they illuminate the "invisible side" of the turbulent period that marked the country's course.

Elements from the secret archive of the leading columnist of the Right, Savvas Konstantopoulos, as well as testimonies from other prominent figures in the press who stood by the ERE, such as the publisher of Vradyni, Georgios Athanasiadis, and Vassos Vasileiou, not only complement the puzzle of the political landscape of that time but also reveal the intraparty differences caused by Karamanlis's departure to Paris.
