Description

The legendary comic book hero "Zagor" was created in 1961. His real name is Patrick Wilding, but the Indians call him Zagor or Za-Gor-Te-Nay, "The Spirit with the Axe". Zagor's story takes place in the northeastern part of the United States in the first half of the 19th century, in a rugged, inaccessible area of the fictional Darkwood Forest in Pennsylvania. Zagor is the legendary hero of the forests, mountains, and lakes who maintains peace between the whites and the Indians and punishes criminals. His parents were massacred by the Abenaki Indians, guided by a fanatical white renegade. Zagor survived the massacre and was rescued from the river by the nomadic hunter, poet, and philosopher "Wandering" Fitzie, whose real name is Nathaniel Fitzgerald. Fitzie raised him as his own son and trained him as a hunter and warrior. Zagor eventually avenged his parents' killers, but Fitzie, who saved him once again, was killed in battle. Supported by a family of wandering tramps, Patrick Wilding transformed himself into a kind of guardian and dispenser of justice, who abhors injustice and always stands by the weak and oppressed regardless of color or race. On that day, Zagor was born and his life became a legend...

The comic book "The Justice of the Wandering Fitzie" is one of Zagor's recent stories - it was first released in Italy in August 2018 - and it reveals yet another unknown piece of his past... when he was still very young and wandering in the Darkwood Forest under the supervision and protection of his foster father, Fitzie. An enjoyable comic book that, as far as its central axis is concerned, is based entirely on Victor Hugo's masterpiece (1802 - 1885), "The Man Who Laughs" (1869).
