Description

The Dogmatics of Vinkentios Damodou (1700-1754) is contained in four voluminous manuscripts preserved in the library of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, consisting of a total of 6,088 pages.

These manuscripts were rescued at the Monastery by the Vatopedi hieromonk Nikodimos Karousos, a student of Vinkentios Damodou and a rhetorician of the Great Church of Christ. Nikodimos had gone to Vienna in 1788 to publish the Dogmatics, after obtaining the necessary approval from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but he did not succeed as he died on August 18, 1788.

Even Patriarch Joachim III, who had read the manuscript of the Dogmatics in Vienna, made efforts for its publication without achieving the desired outcome. The learned metropolitan of Thessaliotida, Ezekiel, who considers Damodou "one of the very wise and greatest teachers of the Nation," writes, "the publication (of the Dogmatics) will bring great honor to the publisher and benefit to the true branch of Orthodox Dogmatic Theology."

In 1940, the learned archimandrite of Agios Pavlos, Loukianos Depountis, in a study describing the unpublished Dogmatics of Damodou, expressed the hope that a Maecenas would emerge to make this publication.

In his extensive Dogmatics, Damodou does not write anything of his own, does not improvise; he may use the scientific methods of his time, but presents the teachings of the Fathers, whom he characterizes as "luminaries," teachers, and supreme theologians of the Church. He sets as a prerequisite for true, authentic theology the purity of the heart, not on a moralistic but on an ontological level, for "the pure in heart shall see God" (Matthew 5:8).

Damodou emphasizes that the true theologian is not the one who speaks intellectually and rationalistically about God, but rather one who possesses "all virtue and holiness."
