Description

The tea made from basil leaves is ideal for colds, runny nose, and cough. The juice extracted from the leaves in concentrated form is used in drops to relieve ear inflammations, while diluted in a solution with water for gargling, it helps with tonsillitis and pharyngitis.

Basil is also used externally to relieve irritation from insect bites, as it has a mild antihistamine effect. Thanks to its composition, basil improves stomach function, reduces intestinal gas, stimulates appetite, and relieves spasms of muscles and intestines.

It is used to relieve toothache, in gastritis, digestive system disorders, and for hemorrhoids caused by constipation. In small doses, it can be given to children who have trouble sleeping.

Fresh shoots in salad help with constipation, while in poultices they draw out venom from wasp or scorpion stings. The essential oil of basil is combined with hyssop, bergamot, or geranium as a stimulating massage for depression.

Usage: Fresh basil leaves, when rubbed on areas bitten by mosquitoes, reduce itching. As a tincture, it is combined with betonica and scutellaria for nervous conditions. With inula and hyssop, it is combined for cough and bronchitis issues. For colds, we can try a mixture of basil, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

The essential oil should not be used externally or internally during pregnancy. We steep a teaspoon of basil in a cup of water.
