"The Created Interests" was first performed at the Lara Theater in Madrid in 1907. The author describes it as a "puppet comedy," but this does not mean that it lacks psychological depth.
Benavente's puppets express human relationships and situations, even eternal truths. The adventures of the rogue Leandro and his servant, named Crispin, originate from the novela picaresca, an anti-heroic literary genre that thrived in Spain in the 17th century.
This Crispin, a runaway from the galleys where he was rowing, is the protagonist of the comedy. He gradually organizes a multitude of interests, both legal and illegal, around himself and his master. His system is simple: with great cunning and relentless inventiveness, he casts hope as bait for his victims.
Everyone is captivated: the poet, the soldier, the merchant, the real estate agent, even the law teacher. When the mirage of hopes is shattered, the crafty Crispin and his master have already ensnared the characters of the comedy in a net of created interests. Everyone is now willing to coexist with the rogues so that their sinful expectations can come true.
