Chamomile
Latin name: Chamomilla recutita
The name chamomile comes from the ancient Greek "chamaimēlon," which means apple of the earth, due to its scent resembling that of an apple. The characteristic smell is due to the presence of cadmium, which is quite unusual for a plant, and it has the property of strengthening weak plants that grow nearby.
Traditionally used as:
- A calming agent for anxiety and nervous tension.
- Relieves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
- Soothing for mouth inflammations (e.g. canker sores) and eye inflammations (e.g. conjunctivitis) in washes.
Its distinctive flavor is enhanced when served with honey or lemon. Boil 1 cup of water and add about 1 teaspoon of chamomile, then let it steep covered for 30 minutes. Strain the solution and drink it. It is preferably consumed on an empty stomach in the morning or 3 hours after a meal.
