Description

Description

If today's philosophers face the indifference - that is, the anti-philosophical stance - of the many, ancient philosophers had to confront something even more unbearable: the Skeptics. Unless, of course, they were Skeptics themselves.

Today, the Challenge of the ancient Skeptics meets the unprecedented interest of researchers and scholars within the international philosophical/university community, sparking a dialogue that - especially since 1980 - has gained intensity and depth, a fruitful dialogue based on ancient texts - sources and their modern critical interpretations.

This is because the Challenge of the ancient Skeptics is directed towards every philosophical, ideological, religious, or scientific doctrine, opinion, or theory, and demands clear answers. It is therefore expected that the ancient Skeptics occupy contemporary scholars more than any other school from antiquity.

Some may think that Western philosophy is nothing more than a collection of 'footnotes to Plato.' However, there are many who confess that modern thought was inaugurated when, for the first time in the West, the works of ancient Greek Skeptics came to light in the 16th century.

This book gathers the essential research tools for the reader who is encountering the ancient Skeptics for the first time: the ancient source texts of the Skeptical direction (many of which are published for the first time in modern Greek), an extensive Introduction to classical Skepticism, interpretive comments, factual notes, and glossaries of philosophical terms and names.
