The necessity for a critical framing of language lessons, as well as other cognitive subjects, is a topic that often arises in pedagogical discussions at all levels of education.
This issue is more relevant than ever in our time, during which there is an abundance of information, but rarely reliable sources. Therefore, an introduction to the philosophy of critical literacy is deemed imperative, especially for young elementary school students.
Nevertheless, concerning the Greek context, the practical application of critical literacy is largely limited. This book aims to familiarize educators with the spirit of critical literacy, with the goal of fostering critical linguistic awareness through an example of a realized project in the first grade of elementary school.
This approach is based on critical discourse analysis and systemic functional grammar. Although there are no recipes in critical literacy, every reader can enrich their teaching repertoire and gain a different perspective on the language lesson, their students, and their own role.
