Description

Description

Starting from the observation that meaning is omnipresent in the human domain, Greimas formulates the theorem that the human world is defined as the world of meaning; to the extent that it does not signify, it is not human.

Therefore, the study of meaning is the field where the sciences of man could find their common denominator. Based on this problematic, he establishes a new interdisciplinary field, General Semantics (or Semiology), which is not identical to the "semantics" of traditional Linguistics, but constitutes a universal epistemology of the human sciences.

This epistemology is elaborated in the present book, which brought Greimas to the forefront of the theoretical revolution of the post-war period that transformed the field of the humanities.
