We spend most of our lives inside buildings, in spaces created by the structures and shells of those buildings. These spaces form the natural environment of many of our activities and give substance and life to the architecture that houses them.

This introductory text is a visual study of the nature and design of these interior settings. The aim of this primer is to make known to interior design students those basic elements that constitute our interior environment.

It outlines the characteristics of each element and presents the choices we have when we distinguish and place them in our design schemes. By making these choices, we emphasize fundamental design principles and how design relationships determine the functional, structural, and aesthetic properties of interior spaces.
