Cicero was the greatest orator of the Romans and the true founder of a Roman system of philosophy. He was also a politician, historian, letter writer, and poet. With Cicero, Latin prose became a rival to the excellent Greek prose.
Cicero was a philhellene and admirer of the Greek spirit, but also a nationalist. Cicero's speech "In Defense of Marcellus" is a thank-you speech of the Senate, in which Caesar, who was already a dictator, had declared that he would not object to the possible decision of the Senate to revoke Marcellus' exile, who was his opponent.
Julius Caesar, obeying the pleas of his brother, the self-exiled Gaius Marcellus in Mytilene of Lesbos, and the senators, forgave his political opponent Marcus Marcellus. Subsequently, Cicero delivered his speech Pro M. Marcello to thank and praise Caesar for granting mercy to his friend Marcus Marcellus.
