The "Manifesto of the Communist Party" (Das Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei), also known as the "Communist Manifesto," is the first programmatic text of the communist movement. Written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels at the turn of 1847-1848, it is one of the classic texts of modernity concerning the political dynamics and historical conception of this very period – regardless of the political origins of each reader.
Beyond its stylistic impressiveness, the Manifesto represents a turning point in modern political theory and history, as it foregrounds and frames with multiple arguments the claim for the entry of the so-called 'masses' into politics as a dynamic subject and a decisive factor. The attribution of a fundamental political role to the working class of society, characterized by the Roman term "proletariat," articulates the demand for a renewed understanding of human history (focusing here on European history) primarily as a history of class struggles.
Furthermore, it simultaneously represents a radical rephrasing of the political-theoretical question concerning the content and form of modern political power, as well as its class dimensions and contents. The "Communist Manifesto" was first published in London in 1848 in German. Since then, thousands of editions have been produced in all the languages of the world, and it is considered one of the most widely distributed books of all time.
This edition is published as part of the year Marx, as 2018 has been characterized, marking 200 years since his birth and coinciding with the 170th anniversary of the first edition of the Manifesto in February 1848. In this edition, there is also included (as part 2) the "little sibling" of the Manifesto, the condensed text "Demands of the Communist Party in Germany," which is a brief program written by the same authors immediately after the publication of the Manifesto, intended for use as a manifesto by the communists of Germany for mass dissemination.
Both texts are part of the publication "Karl Marx - Texts from the 1840s - an anthology," translated by Thanasis Giouras and edited scientifically by Thanasis Giouras and Thomas Noutsopoulos (published by KPSM, 2014).
