The book deals with inscriptions and papyri belonging to the Hellenistic and Roman imperial periods, during which the number of testimonies of this type increases dramatically.
It includes texts of a public and private nature that represent the main categories of inscriptions and (non-literary) papyri. These consist of decrees, treaties, letters, mandates, contracts, censuses, inventories, manumissions, milestones, votive and funerary texts, and curse tablets.
The texts are accompanied by a modern Greek translation and extensive commentary. They originate from the wider geographical area of the Eastern Mediterranean and touch upon fundamental issues of politics, society, economy, and religion during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Issues such as the relationships between cities and Hellenistic rulers or later between cities and Roman officials or emperors, phenomena such as benefaction, the immunity of sacred places and cities, the proliferation of festivals and games, the spread of new cults, slavery, and the flourishing of associations are documented by the selected sources and discussed through their commentary.
