The new Attic comedy of Menander and his contemporaries was preserved through the translations and adaptations by Plautus and Terence. The former is known for the spontaneous and abundant laughter found in his works and his linguistic creativity.
Terence stands out for the dramatic nature of his plots, the naturalness of his stories, and his psychological depth. He addresses family, educational, and moral themes, and reflects in his comedies the mindset of the educated Roman middle class of the 2nd century BC, with the gradual infiltration of Hellenistic humanistic values.
“He presents us with noble masters, loyal slaves, affectionate parents and children, and even kind-hearted courtesans” (W. Beare). The same Greek influence is expressed through the cultivated language and style of his works.
