The "School of Modern Greek Language" (SMGL) organized an international conference on the teaching and learning of the Greek language as a second/foreign language in Thessaloniki in April 2005. The exact title of the conference was "Teaching Greek as a Second/Foreign Language: New Trends."

At this conference, participants had the opportunity to exchange views and address issues related to:

The acquisition of a native and learning of a foreign language, teaching and learning the Greek language as a second/foreign language, new technologies, new methodological approaches, performance assessment, distance education, intercultural language education, curricula, the development of conventional and alternative teaching materials, Greek for special purposes.

The conference hosted internationally renowned scholars, who, in the context of its sessions, developed their positions regarding the Greek language and its teaching to non-Greeks and expatriates. It was a great success, with over two hundred (200) participants, including academics, educators, undergraduate and graduate students from Greece and abroad.
