What is an instant water heater?

The instant water heater is a type of water heater that heats water in real-time. It only heats the water that passes through it at that moment. This means there is no hot water storage tank. This has many advantages, such as energy savings, since only the water that is used is heated, and longer lifespan, since there is no water tank and no accumulation of salts on the resistance and other components.

It operates with electricity and is single-phase.

How It Works

The instant water heater has an inlet pipe for cold water, which passes through the resistance, heats up, and exits through the hot water outlet pipe. A necessary condition for the instant water heater to initially operate is that the pressure of the incoming cold water is not too low.

The water temperature is regulated by a thermostat, so it does not exceed a maximum value. The temperatures that the hot water reaches are preset so that one can use the hot water directly, without needing to mix it with cold water.

The maximum temperature that can be reached for hot water production is 50 °C, while the maximum water flow rate reaches up to 3 liters per minute. Indicatively, 38-42 °C degrees are standard for shower use.

Advantages of instant water heaters compared to traditional electric water heaters

  • It is small in size and doesn't take up much space.
  • There are no energy losses, as only the water being used is heated at that moment. Therefore, we save on the electricity bill. In a traditional water heater, the hot water that is not used is wasted.
  • The hot water used in the instant water heater is used as is, without mixing with cold, as happens in a traditional water heater. Thus, we save water as well as electricity.
  • There is no need to wait for the water to heat up. As soon as we turn on the tap, hot water runs in a few seconds. A traditional water heater takes a few minutes, depending on its size.
  • The hot water never runs out. As long as we have the tap open, we will have hot water.

This review is about the maximum power: 5.7 kW

Easy installation. Requires at least a 16A fuse with reinforced line. I connected it to the kitchen line and only use it when the stove is not working. It heats the water very quickly. It has not been tested in the winter when the water is colder.

This review is about the maximum power: 5.7 kW

Purchased for installation under the kitchen counter in the office.
The water flow is minimal (at least 1/3 of the cold water) and the temperature at maximum setting did not exceed lukewarm.
Replaced with a 10-liter water heater.
Recommended only for summer use in vacation homes where the temperature of the cold water is above 15°C.
For winter use, you are forced to use more kW and with an inverter, of course, the cost increases significantly.
