In the last two centuries, the scientific field of our triple relationship with historic buildings - namely, protection, conservation, and restoration - has made impressive strides.
At the same time, the ways of integrating new uses into accessible old shells, which are incorporated into modern life, have also evolved - a central theme of this book. This dual act of integration and incorporation characterizes the transformation of older architecture from its original state into something radically different, in terms of form and content.
As an educational tool, the old is placed on the anatomical table and disassembled into its component homogeneous elements - as a sacred body, it is embalmed with reversible gestures to deceive the wear of time - as a functional object, it is disguised as a hybrid that circulates in the world of the living. Such interventions in older buildings are now part of our everyday life.
The inexhaustible primary material available to us continually expands up to the present, the list of architectural transformations stretches out endlessly, and the internationally documented cases of exemplary applications in recent decades are impressive.
All indications suggest that we are witnessing the development of a large and dynamic movement in architectural creation, directly or indirectly connected to the subject, which significantly affects the production of entirely new architecture. For this reason, it rightfully claims at least equal recognition with it.
The works presented in Volume A of "Architectural Transformations" come from the areas of Athens and Thessaloniki.
