Description

Description

This book is a continuation of the one titled 1915: The National Schism and covers the interwar period, up to 1940.

Despite the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the Schism was not overcome. It continued primarily as a crisis of national integration, now within the borders of the state, with three fronts of conflict: between refugees and natives, between Greek Orthodox and national or religious minorities, between the New Lands and Old Greece.

It also continued as a quasi-religious schism between the followers of Venizelos and those of the deceased King Constantine. It retained class dimensions as well, but with significant upheavals.

Finally, the National Schism, as a civil war, was rekindled by the execution of the Six and regressed with the Movement of 1935. The book refutes the image of stagnation that is fostered today.

The Modern Greeks and their state were not always as they are often said to be. There were moments, even outside of wars, when they were capable of great achievements, maximizing external loans and foreign aid.

The book also refutes the impression of "cyclicality" that is fostered today. Timely is the highlighting of the dead ends that charismatic leadership entails in its decline, after the "miracles" it accomplished at its peak.
