Description

Just before he was proclaimed Roman emperor, Diocletian (284-305 AD) was born George (probably around 280). He came from a wealthy and noble family in Cappadocia, residing in Armenia. From his father Gerontius, who was a senator and military commander, he inherited the love for military arts - which he pursued - while from his devout mother Polychronia, he was raised 'from infancy' to firmly believe in God and practice virtue, having the Lord, the saints, and the martyrs as his examples.

When he reached the appropriate age, George enlisted in the Roman army. His character, nobility, and kindness quickly made him beloved among the officers and soldiers. Not only that. When in the year 297 the Romans attacked Narse, the king of Persia, George distinguished himself particularly for his heroism and courage, resulting in him being honored with the rank of tribune.

The victories he achieved on the battlefield impressed Emperor Diocletian, who appointed George as a commander, with the title of count, in the imperial guard, at the mere age of 18! Meanwhile, by the grace of God, who heeded the prayers of George and his mother Polychronia, Gerontius, who was still a pagan, embraced the Christian faith, was baptized, and soon departed from this world.

Son and mother continue their life in Christ. They engage in prayer and philanthropy. They share part of their wealth with the 'least brethren' of Christ, regardless of whether they were Christians or pagans.

In the year 302, Caesar Galerius attacked the Persians again. George emerged once more as the bravest and most valuable officer, yet he remained humble and a faithful Christian. That same year, Diocletian, by decree, declared a dreadful persecution against Christians. His command was clear: 'Those Christians who deny and renounce their faith in Christ should enjoy royal gifts and honors. Those who do not comply should pay with their lives.'
