Description

Description

The struggle between the geocentric and heliocentric systems lasted over two thousand years and constituted a scientific dispute that simultaneously had enormous religious, social, philosophical, and political implications.

The geocentric system initially triumphed under the weight of the views of the great philosopher Aristotle and the distinguished astronomer Claudius Ptolemy. The various and differing opinions of the ancient philosophers regarding the shape and position of the Earth in the heavens, as well as the movements of the Sun, the Moon, and the other planets in space, provided the impetus and starting point for further study and development of astronomy and philosophy.

Beyond all the ancient Greek philosophers, whose views are analyzed in this book, contributors included Emperor Julian, Arab astronomers, Roger Bacon, Jean Buridan, Nicole Oresme, Nicholas of Cusa, Regiomontanus, and many others.

Ultimately, in the 16th century, the prominent Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus resurrected the heliocentric theory of Aristarchus of Samos from oblivion and became the new proponent of the heliocentric theory.

Through various adversities and religious persecutions, Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler, Giordano Bruno, Galileo, and Isaac Newton each laid the groundwork for the heliocentric system on solid foundations, each in their own way. The light-giving Sun had taken its revenge. The dethronement of the Earth was a reality!
