Arriving at Livadia, visitors get the feeling they are reaching a typical Greek island. The protected embrace of Livadia Bay is welcoming, with a pebble beach lined with colorful umbrellas, white houses, hotels, restaurants, and shops. The building of the port and customs authorities is preserved there to remind visitors of the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese during 1912-1944. However, behind all these, things are not at all typical, but have a special human soul. This year, a thousand acres were sown with wheat and left unharvested to provide food for the birds. Strange as it may seem, everything here loves all of God's creatures. Perhaps because this was the place where the last European elephant lived, which disappeared over 4,500 years ago. Paleontological excavations in the Harkadio Cave uncovered fossilized skeletons of these pygmy elephants, specimens of which are displayed in the small museum in Megalo Chorio.
