The present edition of the "Acts" of the Monastery of Vazelon contains 190 authentic texts from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries from the codices of the Holy, Patriarchal, and Stavropigia Monastery of St. John the Forerunner and Baptist of Vazelon, near Trebizond, the oldest known monastery in Pontus.
During its 1650 years of operation (from its founding in 270 until its closure and abandonment following the population exchange in 1922), the Monastery was one of the most significant ecclesiastical, educational, and administrative centers of Anatolian Hellenism, particularly during the years of subjugation.
From the rich library and archive of the Monastery, the codex was preserved, which was transported to Russia by the renowned scholar Athanasios Papadopoulos-Kerameus (1856-1912), known for his contributions to the study of medieval Greek literature. This codex is kept at the National Library of St. Petersburg.
From the last monk of the Monastery, Dionysios Amarantides, the icon of St. John the Forerunner was preserved, which was initially deposited at the Monastery of the Holy Trinity in Serres and is now kept at the unhistoried Holy Monastery of Vazelon in Agios Dimitrios Kozani.
The text included in the edition reflects the historical presence of the Monastery for approximately 240 years (1245-1482). These texts were studied by Athanasios Papadopoulos-Kerameus, a lecturer (since 1892) in Medieval and Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of St. Petersburg and head of the Imperial Library of the same city (since 1904).
After his death, they were edited by the Russian university professors Th. Uspenski and V. Benesevich, and in 1927 they proceeded with their publication, with comments in the Russian language. The work was published in 650 copies.
